Milestones
It's just over a year since United beat Cove in the Aberdeenshire Cup Final and in all 5 games against Cove, since then, we have tatsed defeat. It was a superb night for United where a combination of teamwork, grit and determination saw them through to the next round of the Aberdeenshire Shield.
The tempo was set from the start with United playing some fast attacking football and it was no surprise when they opened the scoing on 12 minutes when Graeme Rodger rifled home his 8th goal of the season from just inside the penalty area. Good work by Andrew Greig down the left flank on 26 minutes saw him square the ball accross the goalmouth Garry Wood was on hand to strike home from 10 yards out for goal number two.
Cove started to look a little disjointed and just as the game was rolling towards half time they grabbed a lifeline when the unfortunate Stuart Anderson turned the ball into his own net.
Flashpoint 1 of the game arrived 10 minutes after the restart. Connor Scully made a challenge on Garry Wood bearing down on goal. The challenge just outside the penalty area was deemed by the referee McFarlane as denying a goalscoring opportunity and Scully was red carded.
Cove's night went from bad to worse when Andrew Greig scored a double on 56 and 61 minutes to effectively end the tie. Flashpoint 2 of the game happened on 71 minutes when United keeper Kevin Main went down in his penalty area. It looked as if he may have been struck on the head. Referee McFarlane reached for the red card again and sent Eric Watson off for what he deemed as violent conduct.
Former Formartine player Jamie Masson scored a cracker of what turned out to be a consolation goal for Cove, right on full time and so the victory stood and Formartine progressed easily through to face Buckie Thistle in the semi final.
