Milestones
The Broch made an impressive start to their Highland League campaign with a relatively comfortable win over Formartine United. The home side got off to the perfect start with goals in the first 20 minutes from Scott Barbour and Kieran Simpson. The visitors rarely troubled their hosts and Sean Butcher added a third late on to put the icing on the cake.
After an initial sparring period the home side took the lead on 15 minutes. A mistake in the Formartine defence was pounced on by Lewis Duncan who quickly fed the ball across to Scott Barbour inside the penalty area and he side footed past Ewen Macdonald from 8 yards.
Three minutes later Jonathan Smith fired in a shot for the visitors which whistled just wide of Paul Leask’s left upright. A minute later the Broch doubled their lead when an in swinging free kick by Ryan Cowie was headed home by Kieran Simpson from 6 yards.
A great move on 25 minutes between Duncan and Lewis Davidson down the right wing saw the latter’s cross fired towards goal by Logan Watt but Macdonald pulled off a good save. Six minutes later the Broch survived a scare when Smith found Kevin Hanratty with a flick but Leask blocked the striker’s effort and William West was on hand to clear the rebound.
Four minutes before the break Davidson had an effort from a good position which went well over after the ball fell to him inside the penalty area.
Half Time: Fraserburgh 2 Formartine United 0
The first real effort of the second half arrived on 63 minutes when a corner was cleared to the edge of the penalty box to Barbour who picked out Duncan with a pass, but the Broch midfielder shot well over. A minute later Barbour sent Watt in on goal with a clever pass but the young Broch star’s shot was blocked by Macdonald and Barbour fired the rebound over the crossbar.
In the 68th minute Bryan Ha misjudged a long ball forward but Smith saw his effort thwarted by Leask, the Formartine forward’s effort from the rebound was then cleared by Grant Campbell. Two minutes after that a sweeping move by the Broch saw Barbour break forward and cut the ball back to Cowie, he then picked out Duncan who saw his curling shot dip just over the bar.
The Broch made a couple of change in the last quarter with Duncan and Watt being replaced by Gary Harris and Sean Butcher and the latter got his name on the scoresheet in the 89th minute when he guided home a Barbour cross with his head after Paul Young had released him on the right wing.
